  • Overview

    Provides literacy and reference services at George Memorial Library.  Provides oversight of literacy services for Fort Bend County Libraries.  Participates in planning of programs, policies or objectives for own work group and department.

    Responsibilities

    Coordinates GED, ESL and other literacy services system-wide.  Works with branch staff and outside agencies to offer literacy services to Fort Bend County residents.  Directs and participates in tutor and learner recruitment.  Arranges and coordinates training sessions for volunteer tutors and learners.  Conducts computer classes, conversation circles, book clubs, etc. for specific populations.  Interacts with library patrons to assist them in selecting materials or meeting informational needs.  Explains the use of reference sources such as bibliographic indexes or computer assisted reference tools.  Searches catalog, databases and print sources to answer patron inquiries.          Assists with collection development and maintenance.  Interviews and places community service workers and other adult volunteers system-wide; keeps statistics, handles incoming and outgoing paperwork related to volunteers.  Develops and sustains an active public awareness campaign by speaking to community groups, and disseminating recruitment materials such as brochures, bibliographies, flyers, etc.  Serves as liaison, and may serve as a committee member to literacy agencies and other literacy groups.  Assists and/or instructs other employees with their duties.  Other duties as assigned.  Participates in activities and duties related to emergency management during a local state of disaster as directed by appropriate county managers.

    Qualifications

    Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school.  Knowledge of current library practices and technologies.  No previous experience required.  Computer skills; good verbal and written communication; organizational skills; interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public, other employees and elected officials; ability to complete assigned projects in a timely manner.  Night and weekend work required.

     

    SALARY RANGE: Administrative/Clerical Grade 10, $1,455.20 - $1,712.80 biweekly based on qualifications
